August 2019 - De Boer Staal has supplied a complete shipbuilding kit for the construction of the roll-on roll-off ferry Red Kestrel. Cammell Laird Shipyard, located on the Mersey River in Birkenhead in England, built the ship in nine months.
To meet the high quality standards that Cammell Laird is known for, the shipyard chose De Boer Staal as their main supplier for the ship building kit. The Cammell Laird engineering team designed the entire ship in-house and worked closely with De Boer Staal to maximize efficiency throughout the build.
This resulted in an efficient ship building kit containing plasma cut steel in grade A and AH 36 with 3.2 certificate, marked and formed, shot blasted and primed with the two-component shopprimer Sigmaweld. The various sections were called of just-in-time and a quick and smooth building process was ensured.
The Red Kestrel is the first RoRo ship from Red Funnel, which provides ferry services between Southampton and East and West Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The new 74-meter-long ferry was commissioned in May 2019 and can carry 12 trucks and 12 passengers. The crossing over The Solent takes around 55-60 minutes.
