Hybrid IJ ferry

July 2016 - The Amsterdam City Transport Company (GVB) operates six ferry services across the IJ for pedestrians, cyclists, mopeds, scooters and Cantas. The GVB takes more than 45,000 people a day across the IJ from North Amsterdam to the centre and vice-versa.

The northern bank of the IJ, with the A’DAM Tower, the Eye Film Museum and the NSDM wharf, the location of numerous festivals, has developed into one of Amsterdam's hottest spots in recent years. The former shipyards house hip companies like MTV, and there is a plethora of new restaurants, bars, hotels and shops. Partly as a result, the number of passengers crossing the IJ is increasing and the GVB needs extra capacity. So Holland Shipyards from Hardinxveld-Giessendam was asked to build a new hybrid ferry that can transport 410 passengers at a time, together with bicycles, scooters and other vehicles.

Sigmaweld mc

De Boer Staal supplied the required sheet steel in Grade A shipbuilding quality, with a Sigmaweld mc coating, for the construction of the new ferry. The ferry will be driven by electrical thrusters, which will be driven in turn by diesel generators and batteries. It will also be fitted out with an exhaust cleaning system that reduces the emissions of toxic exhaust fumes and soot particles to a minimum. The new ferry will go into service later this year, an economical and environmentally friendly addition to the GVB fleet.
