September 2016 - Box coolers are efficient cooling systems designed for installation in all types of ships. Box coolers cools down the primary circuit using outboard water and can be used in fresh-, brackish and seawater. No water-filters, valves and extra seawater pumps are needed.
Blokland Non Ferro from Sliedrecht specialises in the production of coolers and heat exchangers for the shipbuilding industry and produces box coolers among others. This cooler has to be placed in a sea chest. To optimise natural circulation and heat-transfer box coolers should be installed with a minimum of 150 mm of free space between the tubes and the inside wall of the sea chest. Box coolers can be demounted if the top plate of the sea chest is above the waterline. Even when the vessel is afloat.
The box cooler will be supplied as a package, complete with a steel welding frame, making drilling and tapping unnecessary. Subsequently the sea chest will be mounted on the steel welding frame. For these box coolers De Boer Snijbedrijf is regularly commissioned by Blokland Non Ferro to cut the steel welding frames to measure.
